Ben Hogan, fellow Gryffindor and one of the hosts of The Podcast that Must Not Be Named (twitter.com/notnamedpodcast), joins me to talk about the politics of Tragedy in chapter 14 of GoF. For instance, Professor Moody (well, Barty Crouch Jr. if we're being precise) seems to be using trauma/tragedy to get the students' attention and loyalty.

Harry and Neville's lives are tainted by tragedy concerning their respective parents, but their realities are starkly different, as we see in this chapter and in the series as a whole. What would the series look like if Neville was the protagonist? And, why is Harry sympathetic rather than empathetic when someone is in need? We also talk about the characteristics Rowling embeds in her characters, and how she breaks the mold with her depiction of male and female traits in our golden trio.
