Garrett Bush of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of the Locked on Browns Podcast give the 3 Big Takeaways From The Browns Last Second Win Over The Panthers. The Browns defeated the Panthers on Sunday, 26-24, but that’s just what the scoreboard said. Here are the real winners and losers from the game:

Winner: Cade York

Let’s just get it out the way, huh? Browns rookie kicker Cade York, is certified. Rookie. Accounting for 14 of the Browns’ 26 points. The long history of Browns kickers being unable to deliver, was visible during the preseason. The NFL preseason is only exhibition games; allowing starters to warm up before the opener, and give the overlooked prospects a chance to prove why they belong on the final roster. But whenever York went on to the field to kick a field goal, exciting jeers were made aloud by the fans. No matter if it was a 19-yard field goal to close out the first half, or a 57-yard field goal to put the Browns’ first points on the board, the people cared.

With the 1:13 left in regulation, it took six plays for quarterback Jacoby Brissett and the Browns, to move the chains from their own 25-yard line, to Carolina’s 40-yard line. And that’s all York needed to make his mark. Panthers cornerback CJ Henderson was present on the field during the kick. At first glance, he thought the kick was veering far right, in which he motioned his arms from center to side, a signal to say “no good”. Only a second later, Henderson moved his hands to his helmet, realizing it’d veered back to the center.

Kick complete. Game over.

Loser: Baker Mayfield’s trash talking

Mayfield played well: 235 passing yards, 16 completions, 27 passing attempts, one passing touchdown, rushing touchdown, and interception. Mayfield was seen dapping up Browns running backs coach, Stump Mitchell, in the pregame. During the game, the camera caught many Browns fans sporting Mayfield’s No. 6 jersey he wore during his four seasons in Cleveland. After the loss, many of his former teammates hugged him, including Nick Chubb.

Mayfield nearly won the game, but his trash-talking backfired, even before the clock struck 0:00. NFL Network’s Cynthia Frelund spoke with Mayfield ahead of week one, and that provided bulletin board material for Cleveland with the alleged statement: “I’m going to (expletive) them up.” During his next press conference in Carolina, Mayfield backtracked and tried to clean up the rumor, clarifying that is not what he said. Either way, it fed into the already-stirring narrative of Baker vs. the Browns, former coach Kevin Stefanski, and former teammate Myles Garrett.

Garrett, the Browns star edge rusher, had his say in the Browns pressers, stating he’d like to get a couple sacks. The damage was done. Garrett took part in two of the four sacks Mayfield took, and helped pressure Mayfield, which resulted in four fumbles. Though he recovered the fumbles, he couldn’t recover the damage his talking brought. And now, the sting of a lost to his former team, will hit hard today.
