Last April, during a routine survey of wild platypuses in suburban Melbourne, zoologists captured and released a mature male that weighed just over 2kg.

It was only later that they realised this male was a new record holder: at 24 years of age, he was the oldest platypus ever seen in the wild. The previous record was 21-years.
