This is Great British Bosses from Anything but Footy, the podcast where we profile the men and women responsible for running sport in this country, from grassroots participation to those medal moments at Olympic, Paralympic and elite level.
Coronavirus and lockdown has dominated our lives in 2020 and for our guest, in this the 21st episode, he faced the unenviable task of closing 1800 golf clubs just 9 weeks after starting his job.
Chief Executive of England Golf Jeremy Tomlinson, started in January, and admits his organisation was inundated in the first three weeks of the cover-19 crisis in the spring with all the uncertainty, but since an early easing of lockdown in mid May, the success of the return to golf has been ‘overwhelming’ and it's now his key focus to "make sure we come out of this with substance" and keep and engage the 20,000 new members and participants, which has seen the number of rounds increase this year by 40%.
Jeremy tells us golf is a top 5 sport in this country and it's for everybody, for all ages, gender and ethnicity. He also reveals he’s a huge fan of the Olympics and thinks its great golf is now part of it again but also wishes for more coverage of the sport on terrestrial TV.
