Thanks for tuning in. This is the Languagecaster.com podcast – for fans of football who are learners and teachers of English. I’m Damon and I am in Tokyo, while Damian, the other half of the languagecaster team is based in London. I wonder how the English fans are reacting to England’s win over Wales in the last group game in Group B? They are probably as happy as the Senegal fans, as their team progress, go through, to the last 16 to face England, as they beat Ecuador 2-1 in Group A’s last round  matches. And that is the game where we have the phrase side footer. That is the focus of this World Cup 2022 football language podcast. OK, here is a short section of a report from the BBC on the Senegal versus Ecuador match – a match that ended 2-1 to the African side. All three goals came from players based in England as Ecuador’s Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo cancelled out a penalty by Watford’s Ismaila Sarr before Chelsea defender Koulibaly’s side-footer won it. (BBC 29 November 2022) DB: First, Sarr scored a penalty for Senegal, but this was ‘cancelled out‘ by Caicedo. Cancelled out in this context means that Ecuador equalised. Senegal were one goal ahead, but the the goal cancelled the lead. Both teams were equal again. So, to cancel out a lead means to equalise. Then, Koulibaly scored a second goal, which was the winning goal, for Senegal. The report describes it as a side-footer. A side footer is when you hit the ball with the inside of your foot, not the outside. It is usually used for control, to guide the ball, to place it. A side footer is usually accurate and feels calmer than a shot with the top of the foot. You can use it as a verb too, to side foot the ball.
