Submit ReviewJohn Lewis Gaddis is the Robert A. Lovett Professor of History at Yale University, and was the founding director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. His book On Grand Strategy is what sparked Sean’s desire to feature him!
Gaddis defines “grand strategy” as aligning “potentially unlimited aspirations with necessarily limited capabilities” and highlights the persistent error of focusing on the former while ignoring the latter. On this episode John draws on a range of thinkers, including Thucydides, Machiavelli, Clausewitz, and Tolstoy and how they used strategy to shape history. In addition, Professor Gaddis teaches courses on Cold War history, grand strategy, biography, and historical methodology. His George F. Kennan: An American Life, won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in Biography.
