Episode 14: With Primoz Roglic and Jumbo-Visma closing in on their first Tour de France title we look back at the journey they've been on to reach this point.
This episode of Kilometre 0 is a sequel to a Friends of the Podcast episode called Chasing Sky that Richard Moore made a couple of winters ago. It told the story of how the Dutch team had its sights on Team Sky (now Ineos Grenadiers) and were seeking to replicate their success in grand tours.
Since Roglic's emergence in 2016 he and the team have made steady progress towards their goal, using stage races and then the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España to hone their tactics. Smart recruitment, including the signing of former Giro champion Tom Dumoulin, has strengthened the team and has helped them close in on Ineos.
In this episode, we hear from Richard Plugge, who helped rejuvenate a team that was struggling after Rabobank pulled out as the team's long term sponsor. Plugge addressed and changed the culture within the team and set his sights on Tour success. Sepp Kuss, one of the stars who has shone in support of Roglic, also talks about the team's progression.
Plus we hear from Dave Brailsford, who built success upon success at Team Sky and has now seen the first serious, sustained challenge to their supremacy at the Tour.
