Soil scientists at Rothamsted Research are calling for a national strategy for managing soils to maximise carbon capture. They’ve raised concerns that payments under the newly announced Sustainable Farming Incentive - which will reward farmers in England for working to improve their soils - could create something of a postcode lottery, as some soils are able to sequester more carbon than others. Specialist cheese makers are seeing a marked increase in interest from consumers in the wake of COVID. During the first lockdown, many cheese makers saw sales crash, with restaurants shut and supermarket deli counters closed down. But we hear how online sales grew, and have remained high since then.
