Destin Daniel Cretton, director and writer of the upcoming Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings joins Jerry to share his story of storytelling through film as an Asian American. We also talk about how the team dealt with making the movie during the pandemic and the rise in anti Asian hate, what this movie means for our children, and what he'd like to share as a message of inspiration to the Asian American community.

Meet DestinMaui-born DESTIN DANIEL CRETTON (Director/Screenplay by/Screen Story by) most recently directed “Just Mercy” for Warner Bros., an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling memoir by American lawyer, social justice activist and Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson. The film starred Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson.

In 2017, Cretton helmed Lionsgate’s “The Glass Castle,” an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling memoir of the same name, which starred Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts.

Cretton’s feature, “Short Term 12,” won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival in 2013, and featured early performances by Brie Larson (“Room,” “Captain Marvel”), LaKeith Stanfield (“Get Out,” “Atlanta”) and Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mr. Robot”).

In 2012 he wrote and directed “I Am Not a Hipster,” which garnered Cretton a 2012 Sundance Film Festival nomination in the Best of Next! Category and starred Dominic Bogart, Alvaro Orlando and Tammy Minoff .(Source: Shang-Chi Press Kit)
