Gwendolen accepts but her mother, Lady Bracknell, refuses to let her marry as Jack/Ernest doesn't have the correct lineage. Algernon learns that his friend Ernest is actually named Jack, and Jack's country life secrets away a hot, young, female ward, whom Algernon decides to seduce on one of his "Bunbury" weekends– "Bunbury" being the name he gives a fictional friend whom he must visit whenever he needs to get out of town. Algernon takes on the guise of Ernest, who in the country is Jack's fictional brother that lives in town, to visit the family home. Jack's ward, Cecily, immediately decides she must marry him, this fictional Ernest whom she has heard so much about. Both men, taking on the name and disguise of Ernest, must convince their chosen spouses to marry them despite the fact that they are not the man they say they are.
