The Secretary of State for the Environment George Eustice says the price of food doesn’t need to rise for farmers to see a fairer price, but that they need to get tough with retailers. His comments at the Oxford Farming Conference have been met with incredulity from some farmers, who say the power of supermarkets in the supply chain makes any negotiation over price very difficult. Brexit caused chaos in the export market for British shellfish and the situation is still not fully resolved. We’ll be looking at all aspects of the industry this week but today we start with bivalves: oysters, clams, scallops, cockles and mussels. When the UK left the EU, third country rules were applied to live bivalves, and the European market has all but disappeared. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
