Submit ReviewThis week, we review the under-rated and under-appreciated military sci-fi, alien invasion thriller, "Battle: Los Angeles." And, we have a lot of nice things to say about it. No, really, we do. The four of us like or love it to varying degrees, but I think we're all a bit baffled as to this movie's low scores & negative reviews.
- How many cast & crew names does Todd butcher during the rundown?
- Which co-host(s) agreed that this is not a deep or thoughtful movie (at least not all the time) but that it does have great moments & depicts people being well-trained, skilled, and working well together?
- Which co-host(s) appreciated the movie's small mission for its protagonists, rather than the save-the-whole-world-at-once missions common in more typical Hollywood action movies?
- What strategies & other military aspects of both the humans & the aliens did the co-hosts appreciate.
- Which co-host brought up the movie's appreciable lack of shaky-cam, and how many co-hosts immediately agreed?
- What other cinematic techniques & narrative aspects did the co-hosts like in the movie?
- There's one scene that is a favorite of 3 or 4 of the co-hosts because of how smart & well-trained it depicts a main character. What is the scene, and who was the first one to bring it up?
- Which co-host teared up a little bit upon the last line of dialogue in the movie, and which co-host had the last line of the movie as a major nitpick?
- And, which co-host gave this a top rating?
Listen now for the answers to these and other questions.
Grab your 8 to 10 magazines of ammunition, first aid kit, combat rifle & bayonet, bivy shelter & sleeping bag, poncho, knee & elbow pads, multi-tool, helmet with night vision optics, 3 MREs, 1 gallon of water, extra socks & undergarments, 2 to 4 grenades, a white smoke grenade, a yellow smoke grenade, a thermite grenade, a phosphorus grenade, handgun, and assorted maps & compasses -- all 65 pounds of typical Marine gear -- as we face off against aliens in Battle: Los Angeles.
And, be careful. That's "Battle - colon (:) - Los Angeles." "Battle *of* Los Angeles" is a TV movie made for Syfy by The Asylum.
Stay tuned in future weeks for our reviews of Jack the Ripper thriller, "From Hell;" one of the best conclusions to one of the best trilogies, "Back to the Future, Part 3;" and the romantic time-travel fantasy, "About Time" (probably in that order, but BttF3 definitely episode #088). We have to discuss it more internally, but hopefully we'll have another installment each of Alpha-Movie-Bet and What Should Andruw Watch? before our season 2 finale (episode 100).
