Telling facts will surely make your audience listen, but telling facts WITH a story will make them not only listen, but also comprehend, think, visualize, plan, and act.

In today’s episode of Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast, Toni emphasizes how powerful storytelling is for public speaking. She also shares her own real-life experience as an example just to prove the effectiveness of the 4-Step System. The 4-Step System, or a.k.a. Then-Now-How-Action, is one of the vital things you should learn if you want learn how to convey a message through a story. Discover also how being vulnerable could be beneficial to a speaker, how you could use the ‘YOU’ fixation, how humility could go a long way and what are the types of listeners you should be wary of during public speaking.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Be vulnerable and let them in. When you share personal stories, you make deeper connection and your content becomes memorable.
  • When you share stories, make it visual and detailed. In this way, they could easily picture it and understand how it similar or different it from their experience or decisions.
  • ‘YOU’ Fixation. One of the best methods to use, may it be in a spoken or written format. Instead of writing or saying phrases with ‘I’, try to change it with ‘you’ content so that it will give more impact to the listener.
  • 4-Step System: Then-Now-How-Action
  • Step 1: Then. Catalyst for change. When you decided to take the leap.
    • Explain and paint a picture of your journey for your audience.
  • Step 2: Now. Share your current results with humility
    • What have changed in your day-to-day, goals, and achievements?
  • Step 3: How. How did you get to the results?
    • Share the system or the process that enabled you to reach the results.
  • Step 4: Action. What actions are needed to be done to gain the results?
    • Remember the ‘you’ fixation when you’re on this part.
  • VAKAD – different types of people and what they focus on when learning:
    • Visual – pictures, clips, videos, etc.
    • Auditory – sounds, conversations, sound effects
    • Kinesthetic – actions, gestures, feelings
    • Auditory-Digital – every minute detail of the story (the brand, the type, the time, etc.)

BEST MOMENTS

  • “Your audience need to know that you care.”
  • “If they see it, they can be it.”
  • “The more we paint the picture, the more we explain how it makes us feel, the more likely it is to connect with people.”
