Learn the easiest model you could follow in making the content for your presentation, pitch, or speech!

In this episode of Presenting, Pitching & Public Speaking Podcast, Toni dives into the Pentagon Model for Public Speaking. This model concentrates on the 5 key elements (just like a pentagon having 5 sides and 5 vertices!) you should be taking note of when making a speech. Discover these 5 key elements and how important is each to ensure the seamless flow of your content.

The Pentagon Model is one of the main sections out of the 28-Step System to Public Speaking that Rob Moore and Mark Homer used up to this day.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Pentagon Model – one of the main steps of the public speaking system.
  • Each point of the pentagon represents the key element of your talk.
    • What – What is your speech about? Make it clear to be well-received and understood. This is the 5% content of your speech – it can be an elevator sales pitch, a quick summary, or a title.
    • Why – Why do they need it? Take in mind the acronym WIFM – What’s in it for me? – that is what people care about. Explain to them not just the features but also the benefits. This accounts for 30% of your speech.
    • How – 40% of your speech – the biggest portion. People want to know how they can achieve the same results as you got.
    • What if – You’ll never please everyone. Identify the main objections. You’ll know how to overcome them. This is the 15% of your speech.
    • When – When can they achieve their goal? They need to know when they could get it. if it’s a product, they need to know when could they buy it. It should be the 10% content of your speech.
  • The pentagon method creates a seamless flow of content. Aside from using it in public speaking, you can also use it for written formats. The receiver will never ever get lost while taking the content. It makes the content memorable and valuable.
  • What if you’re afraid of public speaking? Fear is okay and absolutely normal. It will motivate you to work harder. Look at what you will be missing out if you don’t do it – bigger business, larger audience, or more freedom.
    • “There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars.” – Mark Twain

BEST MOMENTS

  • “Why do we need to use the pentagon? It creates a seamless flow of content.”
  • “What the pentagon does – it builds a need and desire for whatever you’re speaking about, whether it’s your passion and hobby that you want people to join with or whatever products and services you’re offering."
